Footprints: heritage for the future 2/3

We invite you to an online meeting with the architect Kerstin Müller who represents the Swiss Baubüro in situ architectural studio. The event is the second meeting in the series Footprints: Heritage for the Future". The ON-SITE, WITH PEOPLE, FOR ENVIROMENT meeting is the second of three in the series titled Footprints: Heritage for the Future initiated by the PragaLAB team and OWSARP's Sustainable Architecture Group.

We invite you to an online meeting with the architect Kerstin Müller who represents the Swiss Baubüro in situ architectural studio. Baubüro in situ realizes pioneering projects implementing the principles of circular economy, which are based on preserving what already exists on the plot at the time of starting the project and striving to resign from the use of new building elements and materials. In case of adapting existing buildings, they limit their design interventions to the necessary minimum; in case of new constructions, they use materials and elements from demolished buildings. As their experience shows, it is possible to design and construct a multi-storey building with almost 100% reclaimed materials. Apart from the issues related to reducing a negative impact of construction on the climate and the environment, values that are associated with the existing buildings – history, identity, and community connected to the place – are yet another motivation for Baubüro in situ to preserve these buildings. The principles that the studio indicates as the basis of their activity are designing on site, with the participation of local community, respecting what already exists and caring for the environment.

Baubüro in situ was founded by Barbara Buser and Eric Honegger in 1998 (then as Baubüro Mitte). It currently boasts about 60 employees at two locations – Zurich and Basel. At the Venice Biennale in 2021, BBIS was awarded the Holcim Foundation Award for sustainable construction for the design of the refurbishment and extension of the warehouse building K.118 in Winthertur. In 2020, the studio’s activity was distinguished by the Swiss Grand Award for Art / Prix Meret Oppenheim.
